My dad’s been in the hospital for the last couple of days although I just found out last night. I talked to him today and he says he’s a bunch better and my mom verified that. My mom took him Thursday morning when he could hardly get around. His hip has bad arthritis and his heart rate was only around 30 when they admitted him. It’s back to normal but they’re still not sure why. The tests should come back tomorrow. After I talked to him, I talked to one of my closest friends Tommy who just had a lung biopsy. It wasn’t cancer this time. I was so happy after the two phone calls, I almost cried when I walked away from the phone.

Spreading Kaleb's ashes at Reedy Creek Park in Charlotte

We actually decided at last minute for a three day trip to North Carolina for Christmas and had a thoroughly good time yet also thoroughly exhausting. It’s good to see my mom is doing so well physically. I think taking care of my dad is wearing her out mentally. Both physical and mental, my dad is going down hill. He could hardly walk one day we were there but after going to the doctor, we found out it was arthritis and nothing that required surgery. My mom said he was back to normal in a couple of days. We hung with my brother where I had my first fried green tomatoes and considering, I really don’t like tomatoes, I loved them.

After leaving the airport, we took a small tour before we took off for the families. It always astounds me how much Charlotte has changed every time we pass through. The old Charlottetown Mall then Midtown Square is gone. I knew that but I didn’t really expect not to even recognize what was going on there. If you were to have dropped me down there, I don’t think I would have known where I was. It really looks nice by the way. I went to high school close to the airport. There was nothing except a few rednecks here and there and a couple of small subdivisions. Now it’s crazy with development. After our small tour, we went to Reedy Creek Park to spread Kaleb’s ashes where we used to play. I actually got choked up trying to say something. We then threw her treats in the lake to keep her happy. I (we) still miss that dog… It was then to my folk’s house for a day and then to meet up with my brother. After that, we went down to Duncan’s family for the “big” dinner and back to the airport. I was a little homesick for a while. Since then, I’ve just wanted to sleep when I wasn’t working.

Duncan’s out of town this week. It’s the first time since Kaleb died he’s been gone, and my lord it’s quiet in this house, somewhat lonely. I’m driving home from work yesterday in my normal, ‘I need to get home’ attitude, but why? There’s nobody or nothing there waiting on me. I could have drove to Canada and nobody would have been the wiser. This morning I woke up in silence. It was quite bizarre.

Speaking of waking up, though I haven’t had any dreams lately that I’ve been able to remember, I did wake up this morning while writing a song. It started out something like this.

Is it hot down there Jerry Falwell?
Did you just see Tammy Faye, fly up and away?

…and it referenced Karl Rove as being Satan and Brooke Astor bitch slapping him. I guess it was a nice night.

There is this guy at work who just stopped showing up. Several people have called him including myself but he doesn’t return our phone calls. Some people would not show up and really nobody would think it out of character or give a rat’s ass, but this guy is a stand up smart guy and we’re a little worried about him. I drove by his house this morning because he lives close by and his car was there, but it was kind of early so I didn’t stop. Maybe I’ll go by there tomorrow night.

I love Sara Gilbert. I’ve always thought she was probably one of the most talented kid actors. She had a baby at the beginning of the month. Not only did I not know she was pregnant, I had no idea she was a lesbian, though I guess I could have guessed if I thought about it.

This guy at work has a best friend who is  24 and was supposedly going to lose his virginity last night. I’ve always thought his friend was gay, supposedly he’s not. I think he is but doesn’t know it yet. He’s a good kid, I’ll take him on to our team when he’s ready. Wonder if he likes big feet.

I’m a little pissed off because mom is supposed to wear her oxygen full time for these first few days and doesn’t and it pisses me off and I told her.

Ray and Tommy came up and we went out to eat and rode around and talked and did some shopping. Tommy is down to 1/2 pack a day from 3 packs but still has a lot of work to do. Later in the day we went to my nephews house for dinner. He has a great dog–a Rat Terrier.

Mom made great progress today. 100% turn around. I hope it continues. My nephew and his family came over today. Old ladies, maybe all females, love babies. It made her day. My dad seems rested and is doing better. The whole hospital thing really stressed him out mentally and physically. Talked to Ray and he’s coming up tomorrow.

Yesterday afternoon, I got home from work and there were two huge UPS boxes on the back porch. I figured it was something for Duncan’s work so I walked past them and went inside to take care of K Dog and such. I pulled the boxes in and noticed they had both of our names on them so I opened them up. Inside was, no were, three toboggans and three snow trays. I thought it was from some anonymous person who had read my entry because  I didn’t see a from slip. It wasn’t, it was Michael and Lara. Thank you so much. I love those guys. Now, if we only had some snow. Tomorrow we expect a record of 60, thirty degrees above normal. When I called Duncan to tell him we had received toboggans in the mail, he thought we got hats.

Driving home from work my Jeep started to make a horrible LOUD noise. I pulled over, it was the muffler. So this morning, I went to get it fixed. You could hear me coming a mile away as every person on the street was staring at me. I know they were thinking the same thing I would, “Why don’t you fix your dam car?”

Happy New Year!

This week has been pretty nice after a rough one last week. On Saturday, Duncan took me to see The Producers along with dinner, which was excellent.  I then had a few easy days at work and then one of my oldest friends was in the area so I got to hang out with him for a day. I met Joe 23 years ago and it surely shows. We hit Azteca, Mikes, and Home Style Pizza, and basically toured the cities and hung out the rest of the time. Tis’ amazing how people change yet stay the same. Is this the same kid who rode his scooter down North Tryon Street to work at a bank?

This is us with the Christmas tree we chopped down with a hammer many years ago.

QUOTE: “We cannot afford to be cautious, because you don’t change the world by whispering.” May 30, 2006, Eliot Spitzer at the state Democratic Convention. This is why I love this man, I guess this is why so many people love him. I can’t wait to vote on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November.

Michael is here this weekend. He and Duncan are watching wrestling and I think they have about 25 DVDs to watch. The funniest part is really watching them watch as they crank out stupid jokes and sarcastic remarks. I may be able to get some Mexican food out of the deal tonight though.

The wind, she is a blowing…but no damage in this neck of the woods as far as I know it.

A great vacation. I’m home from a warm and toasty North Carolina to a cold and rainy New York. After I landed in Raleigh, I had lunch with Becky for the first time and learned a lot about her. We’ve been online friends for a while. I then headed down east to see the in-laws and dinner and then to Ray and Tommy’s house. A mix up with my luggage was finally settled about 11pm that night.

I spent the next day with Ray and Tommy and the Railroad Museum. Biscuitville and Smithfields BBQ were close by. The next morning I spent in Charlotte, always looking to see how much it’s changed. The whole light rail thing mesmerizes me. It’s then off to Mom and Dad’s house for the next several days. My dad’s doing OK but it’s always a little discouraging to watch my dad get confused over things we just talked about. However, we did talk a lot about his past, things I didn’t know about. My mom handles it well 75% of the time. We took a road trip to my dad’s home place, which is now under Lake Norman as well as to the Hickory area. I got to see my brother and his family as well as old friends from the past. It’s good to see how well my brother and kids are doing after his divorce. Three visits to different BBQ joints last week. I left there and it was off for David, K&W, Krispy Kreme, and a tour of Winston-Salem. I kind of like Winston Salem.

Monday morning in Charlotte was spent driving around looking at light rail construction and here’s a question too. When we moved up to New York, there was an 8 to 10 cent difference in the price of gas. Now there is a 25 cent difference between here and Charlotte and 40 cents between here and the outlying areas of Charlotte. Why???
