I’ve been trying harder to move my old html entries to wordpress. Yesterday I got to July 2007 and it struck me as to how hard that month was when Kaleb died, really the next year struck me as hard. It seems to be a year that hardly seemed to exist at some times. I’m just glad to have made it through it. She was just a dog, how does one deal with the loss of a spouse?
While riding the long way to Pittsfield, MA today, the song Veronica by Elvis Costello came on the radio. I remember once after a phone call with my dad when he was not doing good, that song came on and I just lost it…We also saw a couple of alpacas and I got a picture but I’m still sad I didn’t get a picture of the camel we saw in Northern Vermont several weeks ago. By the time we turned around, the camel had gone into a barn. It’s starting to warm up, hell we’re getting into the thirties these days, but they’re still ice fishing and snowmobiling on the lake in Pittsfield. We did a little shopping at The Berkshire Mall, traversed the mountains again and came home. Beautiful sunny day…
We took a road trip to Burlington, VT yesterday purely by accident. Except for the fact it was cold as shit, really, it was quite a nice place. It’s right on Lake Champlain with a population of only 38,000, the metro area is more than 200,000 which is 1/3 of Vermont’s population. Downtown includes Church St which has been converted to a pedestrian mall and it was actually the busiest pedestrian mall I’ve ever seen even though the temps were in the single or negative digits. Home of Ben and Jerry’s, it was too cold to even think about stopping. If A&W in Middlebury had been open, we would have stopped.
Six years! That’s how long I’ve been in New York. Duncan’s actually been here a couple of weeks longer and it was cold then too. Mentally, it was colder then because I guess I’m just that much more used to it. The fact that it last so long, I haven’t gotten used too. I remember driving up here in the Jeep with every square inch of room full of stuff with cold air pouring in all the way, leaving everything I knew behind in North Carolina. Coming to a place I’ve never been to before for a new life, and new beginning. It took a while but I have a job I like, (most of the time), some really great friends, a pretty cool house, (though sometimes I hate it because something’s always breaking) and my Duncan (the best part).
I got tickets to see Fleetwwod Mac March 17th at The TU Center for Duncan for Christmas. It was canceled today…sucks, they’ll be in Toronto instead. Sure we’ll get our ticket money back but we’re stuck with all the ticket surcharges. Sure you’ll make more money in Canada Fleetwood Mac but you’ve lost a fan for life.
Seeing how, after today, we’re not getting out of the twenties for at least 10 days and not out of the teens for the next five, the parks department was readying Iroquois Lake for ice skating when a city truck fell through for the second time in a year. See video
It is snowing so heavy right now. We’ve mostly just hung around the house today and enjoyed each other’s company. I think I may go lay on the couch and watch The Bucket List before we have to start clearing the driveway later.
This is me walking Casey this afternoon as she takes off after a snow plow.
I grew up in Charlotte and it was well known knowledge that this place would rip you off. Harrelson Ford even got busted by the press for selling a crashed car as new. Who doesn’t think Louis knew what was going on? “That’s Awesome Bill”…… Where is Catfish Hunter when you need him?
Does anybody get that?
After last week’s ice storm, we’re getting set for another blow from Mother Nature tomorrow as we sit on the snow map border between the 6-10 inch limit and the 10-14 inch limit. More snow on Sunday and an “icy mix” for Wednesday not looking to get above freezing anytime before then.
Duncan told me last night that Ann Coulter’s jaw was wired shut. I just said there was a God and wondered who broke it. Turns out she fell, so she says… Here’s what Keith Olbermann had to say.
It’s Christmas Tree selling time again and I enjoy doing it immensely. Unwrapping several hundred soaking wet trees in the 35 degree rain is not the funnest part of the whole thing though.
It’s snowing the biggest flakes I’ve ever seen. I took a picture but it really didn’t convey the message I wanted. We’re expecting 1 or 2 inches but the mountains are looking for 12 to 15.
Polls show that in New York, Obama leads McCain 62%-31%. It’s no wonder we don’t see any presidential ads.
Went to work this morning, it was 25 degrees and there were few leaves on the ground. This is from one afternoon.
As exciting as this political season is, we don’t live in any of the districts where the exciting local races are happening. We live in the relatively calm 21st congressional district where the race between Paul Tonko and James Bhurmaster has been pretty mellow and almost free of ads until this week. I wish I could vote for Kirsten Gillibrand in the 20th district because Sandy Treadwell is a sack of crap who takes the public for fools. James Tedisco is running unopposed in our state assembly district but one block away, I want to vote for George Amedore even though I don’t care for him all that much. Mark Blanchfield could have had this election wrapped up but he had to go and pull a quote from Amedore out of context and turn it into a lie. Mark Blanchfield is a liar. Our own mayor even scolded him at a city council meeting for pulling some last minute political budget bullshit. These two guys are allies. I guess I’ll just vote for Paul Tonko, James Tedisco, and Hugh Farley (who is Fred Goodman?) and be happy. Oh, did I mention Barack Obama?
Autumn is here and the trees are beautiful. The leaves are falling in the valley and our first freeze hits tonight. By the end of the weekend all the summer flowers and plants will be gone. I haven’t decided if I’m going to bring anything in and drag it out or just let it end now. Daylight savings ends in a couple of weeks too. I can’t help but wishing they’d keep it all year so come the first week in December around these parts, the sun would set at 5:15 rather than the 4:15.
