| Five Points is
actually an area or intersection where several neighborhoods come
together. It consist of the neighborhoods of Hayes Barton, Glenwood,
Roanoke Park, and Blumsbury. Also nearby are Brooklyn and
Georgetown. These areas developed from the early 1900's up to the
1950's. Some of Raleigh's nicest houses can be found in Hayes
Barton, named for the hometown of Sir Walter Raleigh for who Raleigh was
named. (You will notice that Sir Walter Raleigh had many different
spellings of his name but this seemed to be the one that stuck after his
death.) If you stand in the middle of the intersection where
Glenwood Avenue, Fairview Road, Whitaker Mill Road, and Glenn Avenue come
together, you are said to be standing in the heart of Five Points.

| Boylan Heights is my
favorite neighborhood in the city. Born during the early part of the
twentieth century, it was one of Raleigh's first streetcar
suburbs. Although now considered the inner city, back then it was on
the city's edge. Most houses are bungalows though there are many two
story homes and apartment buildings along with an assortment of
businesses. Above are typical homes which you may find there. |

| Mordecai dates back to the
1920's, however The Mordecai Plantation dates back to 1785. Located
on the land is also the birthplace of Andrew Johnson along with numerous
out buildings and gardens. Surrounding the Mordecai Plantation is the
neighborhood of Mordecai. Above, The Historic Mordecai House and a
typical house in Mordecai. |
|
| Oakwood is the oldest
neighborhood in Raleigh still in existence. The first houses were
built in the mid 1800's with a mixture of Queen Anne, Victorian, and
Neo-Classical. In the early 1970's, the neighborhood was slated for
urban renewal but was saved at the last minute by being designated a
historical district. |
