| North Carolina State University
is one of Raleigh's four institutions of higher learning.
Established in 1887 as The North Carolina College of Agriculture and
Mechanic Arts, it is now one of North Carolina's top Universities with
28,000 students. Incidentally, the land to build the university was
donated by Stanhope Pullen, the same man who built Pullen Park. |

Shaw University, was
established in 1865 by the American Baptist Home Mission to train black
ministers. Over the years, it has had a law school, medical school,
and school of pharmacy. It is one of the two historically black
colleges in Raleigh.
Saint Augustine's College opened in
1868 and their main mission was to educate freed men. Saint
Augustine's scope was never been as broad as Shaw's but it has been more
successful over the years with a lower profile. |

Meredith College is the
largest 4-year college in the Southeast for woman. Established in
1891 by the Baptist Church, it now has 2400 students.
Peace College was established in 1857 by
the Presbyterian Church. It is also a school for woman and was
originally a kindergarten thru twelfth grade school in addition to
secondary education. By 1969, it was a school of higher learning
only. |

| Dorothea Dix Mental Hospital,
or Dix Hill, opened in 1856 by a crusader of the mentally ill. After
Ms. Dix took care a local politician's wife when she became ill, Ms. Dix
was asked what she could do for her. She quickly asked for her
husband's support for the new hospital. Also above, North Carolina
Central Prison, and the skinniest house I've ever seen. |

| To Sum It Up, almost
everything I have shown you is "inside the beltline".
North Raleigh does have a lot of interesting features but is mostly the
same as any other new town. As the area develops, more interesting
areas will pop up but inside the beltline will continue to be where you
will find the most interesting things to look at. |
