Schenectady was founded in 1661 and burned in 1690 in "The Schenectady Massacre" by an attack force of the French and Indians. It was rebuilt but grew slowly for many years. In 1825, The Erie Canal opened going right through Schenectady. Just a few years later, in 1831, the first steam locomotive made the first passenger trip from Schenectady to Albany. It wasn't until 1886 when Thomas Edison came to town to open the Edison Machine Works did Schenectady start to grow. General Electric was formed from this company and it was headquartered in Schenectady. In 1901, American Locomotive Company (ALCO) was formed when eight different locomotive merged and headquartered in Schenectady. These events set the scene for the next 50 years like the first regular television broadcast in 1928, the first successful diesel-electric locomotive in 1924, and massive steam locomotive and tank destroyer production at ALCO. The latter part of the twentieth century has seen the city decline in both population and infrastructure but it has recently seen an upswing in both. Above you'll find links to many of the neighborhoods with more to come.
