Rain: Day nine, but who's counting? We may see some sun
on Wednesday. It does give me a chance to play with my map site though. I really don't
think anybody cares except me but it is a thing I do. I plan to
unveil the new and improved site sometime this month. OK, maybe
the next month. I also recharged my air conditioner
yesterday. All summer I have been without air condition in the Jeep,
but who cares? It's a Jeep right. With all the rain it was
becoming increasingly difficult to keep the windows defogged. I
have been under the impression that it was against the law to recharge
an air conditioner, any air conditioner, R134a type or R-12 type.
Not true, the jeep is new enough to use R-134a and
they sell it at Advance Auto. Thanks Easter
Bunny.

1 September 2002...Later

We spent the day with Duncan's sister Beth who I feel like is my
sister because I don't have one. We toured Ft. Bragg Army
Base. Duncan's dad retired from the army many years ago so they
kind of grew up around the base. Above is Iron Mike, a
monument from 1960 dedicated to the Airborne Trooper. This thing
is huge and it
serves as a reminder that during these times I appreciate these guys and
all they do for us.

My ass feels like it has taken a massive pounding, and not in the
good way. Started out the day with a 13 mile bike ride through Umstead State
Park with Robert. It has been a while since I've done that and
I must say I only made one pussy stop and besides my ass, I'm really not
sore. Came home, mowed the yard and it was off in the Jeep for fun
and excitement and then had a lovely dinner with
Duncan. This may qualify as one of the prettiest days of the
year. I also fixed the patio table that has been close to death
since it broke while moving up here last year. Now, I'm settling
down with Cops and maybe I'll play with my maps. Remember, new map stuff coming soon.

Visitors from out of town, Ray and Tommy, helped brightened the day
although we really accomplished nothing. Did a little cruising,
but mostly talking and cutting. And almost as exciting, I put the
final touches on my totally revamped map
pages, phase one. Like I've said, maps are a geeky hobby of
mine and this is my collection of old North Carolina maps. I've
also included things that struck me about each map as well as insets,
maps, and pictures.

By law, every 10 years a census is taken to count all who call this
place home. North Carolina added a twelfth house of representative
in 1990 and a thirteenth in 2000. They must also draw new state
legislative boundaries. Of course because politicians are
involved, drawing the new political boundaries for both state and
congressional districts cannot be easy. Because they can't draw
them without their own partisan interest coming first, it takes a judge
to finally set them out for them. Not much more than a month ago,
the boundaries were drawn and the political advertising began. I
have not be able to decipher who's for what and what's for who.
Let alone the fact that I haven't lived here long enough to know who the
old timers are either. So I will spend the rest of the night
deciding who to vote for in tomorrow's primary delayed from May.
Main reason for me to vote tomorrow: I don't believe you are
allowed to bitch if you don't at least cast a vote. I must
preserve my right to bitch.

I had a pretty good experience at Target tonight. I bought an answering machine
and I got cash back on my debit card so I did not really notice that he
charged me for two. I got home and looked at the receipt and
thought if I go back they are going to thing I am full of crap. I
decided to go back anyway and I caught no grief for it at
all. No questions at all. They did not even look in my
bag. The whole transaction took less than a minute and it was
enough to make me send off an e-mail to Target to thank them. I
think it took longer to find an e-mail link on the Target site than it
took to drive to the store, get a refund and drive home. Now,
we'll sit back and wait on Hanna.

Braving the rain today we ran across the greatest "old
stuff" place. I can't call it an antique or junk dealer
because this place was loaded with old magazines, albums, 45's,
newspapers, books, and whatever. In the back we found three old
crates full of maps and I was in hog heaven. They also had an
abundance of old advertisement cutouts with old cars, buildings, and
sports articles. We'll be back....
And what the heck does hog heaven mean anyway? Maybe it's when
Duncan picks up toilet paper while he is out not knowing I am doing the
same thing. We now have 31 rolls of Scott Tissue. That's hog
heaven.

Both my brother's and my father's birthday are in the next few days
so today was the big family get together. A great time was had and
I even got some great family pictures out of the deal. Maybe I'll
post some but for now I am tired and bed is looking awful good right
now. See ya...

Almost half of all teenagers have four or more credit cards. I can see why it
may be a good idea to have a credit card because how else are you going
to learn how to use one. But four? Why would anyone need
four? Wait, I have four. But somehow it seems OK for me to
have four. Honestly though, the only one I use is the Shell Visa
which gives me five percent off my Shell gas purchases. That was
really nice when gas was $1.50 last year. And I also use them when
I make a big purchases that may take a few months to pay off. I
hate owing anyone even a dollar.
And good-bye LaWanda. How you've
made me laugh.

Several years ago my mom gave this this great old clock she got as a
wedding gift. It has not worked for as long I can remember.
A few months ago I knocked it over and broke the crystal in the
front. It has been in the shop for the last month and you should
see it now. Not only is the crystal good as new, it works, and
they also cleaned out the whole thing while they had it. It is
round, about a foot tall, wood with gold trim, and it has the signs of
the zodiac encircling it. It is now one of my most treasured
things. This 53 year old clock that was a wedding gift to my folks
now sits on our mantel to be looked at always.
Today we explored Duke Forest,
Eno River State
Park and Duke University. We also
both have burnt heads.

29 September 2002
Driving home from Duncan's sister's house tonight, it was chili in
the open Jeep. I looked over at Duncan and I thought he was having
a seizure. I immediately went for the brakes but it turns out he
was just jamming to the beat. The thing is with me, you can tell
the difference between jamming to the beat and a seizure because the
jamming is much more violent than the seizure. And how do you tell
the difference between the North Carolina
Antiques Festival and a fancy over priced antique shop? Well,
it's not the prices. It may well be the fact that The
Sons Of The Confederacy shoot their guns off every ten minutes
reenacting the Civil War. Yes, they still lose every time.
