A little bit of work on the back side of the house and it's
done. Just three more sides to go. Today was a
holiday so I took it off. We missed the local fireworks
last night so we went to Albany to check out the capital's
display. Not bad but we got ran off from our parking spot
by the police while hundreds of other people were parked on the
side (off the road) of I-787 too. Not fair if you
ask me but nobody did. I love fireworks, something I used
to look forward to every year since I was a kid. One thing
though I have never understood is firecrackers. There is
no visual display to them, just loud noises. Over and over
and over...
Happy Fourth! Now back to Maude on All In The Family.

How many times have you seen some bratty kid cussing and
acting totally obnoxious and you just wanted to go over and
spank him (or her)? Here's to the guy trying to protect his bird from a
nine year old brat. Now, if we could just smack his mom a
few times.
We are having insulation blown in the walls and attic this
week and it's very interesting how they do it.
Actually drilling holes in the clapboard, blowing in the
cellulose and then plugging the holes. They actually
remove the cedar shingles and drill under them, plug the hole
and replace the shingle. You can't even tell where they
were. In the attic, we have large joist so they're blowing
it under the planks so we'll still be able to walk up
there. It doesn't hurt either that the two boys doing the
job are cuties and one is actually hot. Today, it is
raining for the first time in a while and I'm kinda enjoying it
actually. It gets me out of painting and it makes tight
tank shirts on young hot boys even tighter.

Friday night sometime after 10:00, Duncan decided he wanted
to go to North Carolina. He got a flight for early the
next morning, and less than 12 hours after he decided to go, he
was there. You can't drive there that fast. He's
having a good time hanging with his folks and sister and should
be back tomorrow. Me, it's the same old same old but I got
a lot of work done on the house. I should be done in about
15 years I think. I also got to eat a lot of bad food for
which I am feeling sorry for now. Speaking of Duncan, his
birthday is next weekend and I'm still coming up short on the
gift thing. Both of us are pretty hard to buy for but I
think I usually do pretty good. Well there was that one
time.
Here in Schenectady, I would like to know why everybody who
rides a bike rides toward traffic and in the lane itself a lot
of the time. I sometimes think they have some sort of
death wish. I sometimes think I would like to oblige
them. Did we not all learn in school to ride with the
cars? Are there not commercials (PSA's) on all the time
telling you the same? And are you not also suppose to stop
at red lights and stop signs when riding? Well you are but
I'll let you slide on that one because I don't either.
And as for Banzai, it seems
kinda cool but I can't take listening to the announcer the whole
time.

Today was the day for Kaleb's
annual checkup at the vet. Everything is good except her
teeth need cleaning and some need to be pulled. She had a
lump that I was concerned about but it's just a fatty tumor that is nothing to be concerned
about. Being new to the area, I was not sure where to take
her so the vet we went to today was recommended by a
friend who has seen him for many years. He seemed to know
what he was talking about but I was not particularly
impressed. I felt like we were very rushed and he didn't
seem to want to take a little extra time to pet Kaleb or get to
know her. He just seemed to assembly line her
through. When we moved to Raleigh, the first year I picked
a vet at random close to the house. I was not impressed
with them either so I went to another the next year who I am
sure I would have gone back to again. Being said, they
still could not compare to Mallard
Creek Animal Hospital where we went for nine years
previously. Props to Dr. Grace and the crew there.
Even Kaleb was always excited to go there.
Duncan home soon.

Duncan's birthday has come and past as has another
year. I think he's gonna make it. Ray and Tommy
arrived Friday evening for a visit. Yesterday we saw
everything Schenectady has to offer (which isn't much) so today
we're headed to New York City. The offerings should be a
little better there though I don't think we'll see any Chero-Cola, probably not even RC.

We took Ray and Tommy down to New York yesterday for some
fun. We did mostly touristy stuff (pictures soon) and had
a great time. One of the things that I had not seen on my
last trip was Grand Central Station. I knew it was
big but I didn't know just how big. I also didn't know
just how beautiful of a building it is. Next trip will
include more Soho and Greenwich Village. More pics and stuff
soon.

21 July 2003...Later

Now if somebody can tell me why the exit numbers on I-87
start over three times between New York City and Albany.
It starts out at Exit 1 in New York City. After Exit 14,
it becomes the New York State Thruway and the exit numbers start
at one again. In Albany, The Thruway splits off onto
I-90. The exit numbers then start over again. There
are three Exit 1's on I-87 in the State of New York.
We survived the tornado warning today by the way. A
good storm can be kinda fun once in a while.
And why was there a turkey in Battery Park yesterday?

23 July 2003

We survived the tornados
and the perennials are in full bloom making for a beautiful
rainy day. Today is also the last day you can smoke in
bars, restaurants, and an assortment of other places in New
York. I'd like to say that I feel bad for all the smokers
out there who will have to step outside to take a puff seeing
how I have had a lot of friends who have smoked over the years
but I don't. I've had to endure the nauseating smell of
those sticks for all my life and the way you smell after you
come home from a bar takes the cake. My mom smoked when I
was a kid (thank God she stopped), and I've had to work in
workplaces where everyone smoked (thank God they passed a law
there too). NYC CLASH, Citizens Lobbying Against
Smoker Harassment, has filed
a lawsuit saying this law violates The Constitution.
Nobody has said you can't smoke, I just don't have to smell it
so often. The law says you can't urinate in a public place
but they don't say that is unconstitutional also. Frankly,
I'd rather smell urine than cigarettes.
And come back soon guys.

The books I'm
reading lately seem to have a specific theme to
them. Let's see, Step By Step Exterior Painting, Restoring Old Houses, Old House Colors, Kitchen and Baths, and The Home Inspection Troubleshooter.
My favorite perusing book is Houses By Mail. My mom was
raised in a Sears House and my grandma lived there
until right before she died. Between 1908 and 1940,
Sears sold more than 100,000 houses in 450 different
styles across the country through their catalog. They were shipped by
train from their assembly plant to your town.
All the supplies were then brought to your site. It
included everything from lumber to hardwood floors, nails,
brick, and the kitchen sink. The styles ranged from
simple cottages to elaborate multi-level homes. They
were cheap compared to stick built houses and the quality
was very high. My grandmother's house had a full
basement, front porch, and 3 bedrooms. At one time,
they added on a 4th bedroom, a back porch, and a
breakfast-laundry room. The house still looks good
today. But not as good as this house after all
the work we've done. Pics soon.
